WHAT IS A COLORECTAL SURGEON?

A Colorectal Surgeon is a surgeon who specialises in the diagnosis and treatment of conditions that affect the small bowel, colon, rectum and anus. Colorectal Surgeons are experts in the surgical and non-surgical treatment of these problems. Colorectal Surgeons treat benign and malignant conditions as well as performing routine colonoscopy screening.

Colorectal Surgeons have undertaken advanced training after qualifying as a General Surgeon.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A COLORECTAL SURGEON & A GASTROENTEROLOGIST?

A Gastroenterologist is a doctor who has undergone training in internal medicine medicine and further training in gastroenterology. Gastroenterologists do not perform surgery on patients.

A Gastroenterologist specialises in diseases of the digestive system (gastrointestinal tract). They diagnose and treat conditions that may affect the oesophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine (colon and rectum) and biliary system (eg. liver, pancreas, gallbladder, bile ducts).
